Before there was Toddlers and Tiaras, there was JonBenet Ramsey. The murder of the 6 year old beauty queen has made worldwide headlines for over 16 years now, but the case remains cold.

Court documents from 1999 which show that a grand jury voted to indict JonBenet Ramsey's parents, John and Patricia, were released on Friday. The Boulder District Attorney, feeling the evidence against the Ramsey's to be insufficient, never signed the indictment and charges were never filed against the couple.

In 2008, a new District Attorney concluded that the DNA evidence found at the crime scene cleared John and Patricia Ramsey and their son in JonBenet's death, two years after Patsy passed away from ovarian cancer.

The release of the previously sealed documents from 1999 has cast a new spotlight on both Ramsey's murder and her parents' innocence. The documents show that the court sought indictment against each of her parents on two identical counts.

The grand jury believed that John and Patricia "did...render assistance to a person, with intent to hinder, delay, and prevent the discovery, detection, apprehension, prosecution, conviction, and punishment of such a person for the commission of a crime, knowing the person being assisted has committed and was suspected of the crime of murder in the first degree and child abuse resulting in death."

The documents did not determine just who this mysterious person was but believed the Ramsey's offenses had been committed between December 25th and 26th, the day her body was found in the basement of their family home.

While the JonBenet Ramsey case is open, it remains cold. Police intend to review the newly released documents in order to decide whether or not they warrant taking action.
