The Voice can be an emotional rollercoaster. Half the singers picked up by a coach after the blind auditions can be dispatched immediately in the battles.
Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, Adam Levine and Cee Lo Green pair the contestants up for sudden-death duets. One wins, one goes home. Boom.
Unless, that is, one of the other coaches presses the button to "steal" a singer cast off from other rosters. That great new twist proved vital last night.
Let's break down the first battle rounds of The Voice Season 5!
Briana Cuoco vs. Jacquie Lee: "House of the Rising Sun" (Team Christina)
The female rockers were assigned to put their stamp on this classic, and while Kaley Cuoco's sister stood out at first, the high schooler took command.
Aguilera opted for Lee, at which point Green and Shelton immediately pushed their buttons to make the steal. Briana Cuoco joined Team Blake.
Grey vs. Nic Hawk: "Domino" (Team Adam)
Shelton and Green preferred Hawk's "disco" energy, but Levine opted for Grey's steady vocals. As Hawk began to cry, Shelton pressed his button.
"Why is Adam such an idiot?" the three-time winning coach joked. "You delivered an excellent singing performance, along with all the other crap that you do!"
Spoken like a true mentor!
Amber Nicole vs. Timyra-Joi: "Listen" (Team Christina)
The young female powerhouses were excited to soar on the Beyonce ballad, and dueled to top the other, bringing their coach Aguilera to tears.
Christina followed her gut instinct and saved Nicole.
Justin Chain vs. Shelbie Z.: "Don't You Wanna Stay" (Team Blake)
During this country duet, Chain brought more stage presence, but Green and Aguilera loved Shelbie more, and Shelton agreed, saving Shelbie Z.
Anthony Paul vs. Caroline Pannell: "As Long As You Love Me" (Team Cee Lo)
The teens were excited to put a twist on the Justin Bieber hit, with Pannell's sweet timbre giving it a new intrigue on the song, especially as a ballad.
Shelton praised Paul's emotional connection, but Cee Lo said, "Let me just make a point: I want to win the show this season." And with that he chose Pannell.
Aguilera saved Paul, however, saluting his vocal restraint.
Donna Allen vs. Tessanne Chin: "Next to Me" (Team Adam)
This was a toss-up, putting the Miami Sound Machine alum against the Jamaican rock singer, each battling to get a note in edgewise it seemed.
"Are you Tina Turner?" Aguilera asked Allen, while Green praised Chin's effortless restraint. Ultimately, Adam chose to continue with the Chin music.
