A Michigan man (not Florida man, as one might assume) said love drove him to take a cross-country road trip with his girlfriend's corpse in the passenger seat.
Yes ... you read that correctly.
Ray Tomlinson of Detroit arrived in the Oven Mitt of America Monday night after driving from Arizona with his 93-year-old mother and his girlfriend.
The latter, 31, died in transit.
Determined not to leave her body alone in a hospital and convinced he had 48 hours to legally report the death, Tomlinson decided to keep on driving.
"I cared too much for her," said Ray, who has not been charged with a crime related to the death, which officials do not expect was the result of foul play.
Police theorize it could've been a drug overdose - she was found with an empty bottle of OxyContin - but have yet to report the woman's cause of death.
The 62-year-old Tomlinson said he met the woman, who was previously homeless, last year while she waited for her boyfriend to get out of prison.
He helped her get back on her feet, he said, and let her stay with him. Together, they went to Arizona to spend the winter with his elderly mother.
The woman was hospitalized a nine times in Arizona for mental health and drug problems, and had been receiving treatment as recently as last week.
The trio left for Michigan this past Friday after the woman was released from a facility with several drug prescriptions, including one for OxyContin.
Somewhere en route, probably in Oklahoma or Texas, she died. Despite him hauling ass, the body had begun to decompose by the trip's end.
Tomlinson thought he had 48 hours to report the death, but told police he was overcome with denial and grief and wished he would've handled it differently.
