So... are these kids alright?
On Red Band Society Season 1 Episode 1, viewers met to Charlie, the show's 12-year-old narrator... who happens to be in coma. But that didn't stop the sick boy from introducing us to the friend he has met in the hospital:
- There's Jordi, a 16-year-old who arrived in California to seek treatment at the renowned Ocean Park Hospital.
- There's Leo, another 16-year-old, who is charming and independent and considered the leader of this unusual group.
- There's the rebel Dash, Leo's best friend who is determined to live a full life despite a diagnosis of cystic fibrosis.
- There's 15-year old Emma, Leo's on-again-off-again girlfriend who is coping with an eating disorder.
- And there's Kara, a not-so-nice cheerleader who shares a room with Charlie. Her heart is failing.
The pediatric ward is run by Octavia Spencer's Nurse Jackson, a caregiver with a take-no-prisoners approach. She is intent on ensuring these teens get the most from their lives, despite their circumstances.
Doesn't sound like the most uplifting show in the universe, does it?
However, symbolized by the red bands they wear on their wrists, these kids form life-changing bonds and a connection no one else can really understand.
On the opening episode at least, the writers managed to find the balance between sweet and sentimental, serious and funny, heartbreaking and inspiring.
We're definitely tuning in next week for more. How about you?
