Reign Season 2 Episode 4 Recap: Like Lambs to the Slaughter >>Hollywood

Thursday night on Reign Season 2 Episode 4, we saw the domestic impact of the constant struggle for institutional power takes place on the CW series.

The personal side of the political power struggle made for something of a departure from the norm, and perhaps most significantly, Greer took control.

Greer's attraction to Leith is a key aspect of Reign Season 2 Episode 4, even if she concedes, openly and honestly, that she is uninterested in a life of great risk.

Just passion, which seems to trump great risk.

The christening of Francis and Lola's child, an event which Catherine is planning to Lola's great resentment, also played a role in this latest install ment.

Lola nixes Catherine as a godparent, explaining "we have a long history of reasons why" and being remarkably polite about that given the circumstances.

Francis stands beside his wife quietly here.

Lola may be considered to be the "most powerful woman" as the king's mistress, but with a total lack of transparency, that is marginally true at best.

Well, if you watch Reign online, you know she doesn't always get a chance to fight back against this. Last night was the exception, and she loved it.

Mary had to summon her political strengths just to win an argument that was otherwise unwinnable, a fact that her rival seemed to quietly relish in.

Since Lola's been pregnant, a lot of their interactions have seemed almost mundane, but not so here, where you could cut the tension with a knife.

Sadly, they reconciled remarkably quickly.

Hopefully it's a dramatic battle to be fought another day, because that felt like a long time coming and clearly there's a lot of pent up anger to go around.

Also fading away quickly was Mary's brief pregnancy storyline, which saw her conceive and lose the baby in a very short period of screen time.

Her poignant blend of physical pain, emotional grief and regal resolve told the story though, and were perfectly in character for a woman of her stature.

Does she not feel? Of course she does.

But there is an expectation that the kingdom comes first and that her wants and needs - or at least feelings - are secondary. She is tragically guarded.

The whole second season so far has built up to situations with stark realities and complicated situations, even if Francis seems to still be consequence-free.

Where do we go from here? We can't
