Earlier this month, the Internet got seriously peeved after seeing video of Derick Dillard sledding toward a cat in an obvious attempt to run it over (or at least scare the bejesus out of it).
PETA slammed Dillard for mistreating an animal for his own amusement and then posting footage of the incident online, as though he takes some kind of sick pride in his actions.
Almost two weeks later, Derick has neither apologized, nor removed the video from his Instagram page.
Fortunately for him, his sister-in-law Jessa Duggar is slightly more media savvy, and she sought to appease angry fans during a radio interview this morning:
"Our hills are very uneven, so he started to sled and the cat just happened to be there and the cat jumped out of the way," Jessa says around the 6:00 mark of the above video.
"I don't know if you saw the video or whatnot, but he didn't hit the cat. The cat is fine."
Much in the same way that Derick missed the cat he clearly intended to run over, Jessa seems have point being made by those who were offended by the video.
Yes, the outrage would have been worse if Derick had actually hit the cat, but the fact remains that he had plenty of places to sled, but he chose a path (then got a push for extra speed) where he was sure to come close to running over a cat.
Maybe Jessa would have been able to make a convincing argument that this whole thing has been blown out of proportion (big maybe), but she can't convince anyone who's seen the video that Derick didn't intend to hit the cat.
Isn't there some stuff in the Bible about not lying and honoring thy reality show fans, or something? We'll look it up and get back to you.
