At first, the alarming news from the set was that Gordon entered rehab immediately following the interview. Now, we know that it's even more astonishing that Gordon was able to sit for an interview at all.
Gordon was falling down drunk before the interview even began and according to Phil, he was "screaming that he wants to die" in the moments before he went on camera.
It's a testament to McGraw's talent as a therapist that he was able to convince Gordon to seek help. Of course, the good doctor is also a television host, so he recorded one of the most memorable interviews in daytime talk history before Nick left for treatment:
Before the interview, Nick was so severely inebriated that he couldn't stand under his own power. He told Dr. Phil that he had taken "two shots." He later admitted to being drunk, but "not on drugs"
One of the strangest allegations made by Gordon came early in the interview. When asked about his previous three stints in rehab, he claimed he had simply checked in so that he and Bobbi Kristina could keep Whitney Houston company while she sought treatment.
There were points in the interview during which Gordon became confrontational with Dr. Phil. He stated that Phil spoke as though he were on Xanax, and encouraged him to "get to the point" on more than one occasion.
Twice during the interview, Nick stormed off set. He was coaxed into returning to his seat both times, but he continued to complain of health problems such as panic attacks and kidney pain caused by alcohol abuse.
The above clip contains two of Gordon's strangest moments from his interview with Phil. First he laments losing "the most legendary singer ever" (a strange way to refer to one's adoptive mother), and then he becomes upset after being told to "man up."
The interaction between Gordon and McGraw could hardly be described as an interview, as Phil barely asked any questions due to Nick's erratic behavior.
Gordon laughed, cried, screamed about his hatred for Bobby Brown, accused Dr. Phil of being on Xanax and generally behaved in a bizarre, distressing fashion throughout his time with McGraw.
The whole affair was tragic not only because Gordon is clearly suffering from life-threatening addiction and severe emotional distress, but also because Bobbi Kristina's health crisis has now become the sort of media spectacle that her fans and family had feared.
It's only been three years since the death of Whitney Houston thrust Bobbi and Nick into the public eye, and now they find themselves under intense scrutiny again - and the circumstances are no less tragic.
Bobbi Kristina and Nick Gordon were married, but reportedly estranged at the time of her tragic hospitalization. We hope she is able to beat the odds and recover.
