Last night, Kathy Griffin quit Fashion Police with a series of tweets describing the various reasons why the show was no longer a good fit for her creatively.
"I do not want to use my comedy to contribute to a culture of unattainable perfectionism and intolerance toward difference," Kathy wrote in a heartfelt message to fans.
While she didn't mention the controversy surrounding Giuliana Rancic's joke about Zendaya's hair, it's widely believed that the outrage over Rancic's comment was at least indirectly involved in Griffin's decision.
While that may be true, sources are now saying that Griffin didn't quit because she objected to Rancic's remark, but rather because she feared that her continued involvement with the show could prove damaging to her career and her reputation.
"She honestly didn't know if the show was going to survive," a production insider tells Radar Online.
Sources add that after Kelly Osbourne quit Fashion Police, Griffin became convinced that the "writing was on the wall" and remaining on the show would amount to clinging to a sinking ship.
Griffin seems to have made the right call in terms of career-preservation, as her Twitter page has exploded with support from fans and other celebrities who clearly comedienne stepped down as a result of her principles.
Fashion Police is set to return to E! with a new episode on March 30, but with only two hosts remaining (Rancic and Brad Goreski) many are skeptical about the show's future.
Did the death of Joan Rivers signal the end of an era? Is there no longer a place on TV for Fashion Police's trademark brand of snark?
Whatever the case, it certainly looks as though it's about to become a lot safer to rock some unflattering attire on the red carpet.
