Kendrick Lamar shook up hip-hop and became the talk of the celebrity news world with his verse on Big Sean's "Control," far outshining Sean himself.
Big Sean isn't worried about that, though, claiming he not only "orchestrated" the Kendrick Lamar "Control" verse, but feels it's crucial for the genre.
He gave his fellow MCs props, saying "Of course Kendrick spazzed on it, of course Jay Elec spazzed on it ... I feel like we all added our own flavors to it."
"I knew what it was for hip-hop culture. I knew how important it was."
He decided to leave his verse intact even after hearing Kendrick Lamar call out fellow rappers (and even Lindsay Lohan) in the fiery lyrical tirade.
"I'm not a ho ass ni**a. I wasn't gonna change my stuff for nothing."
"I didn't want to alter it," he added. "I knew how important it was and I just wanted to give it out there and orchestrate that and push the culture forward."
He admits that Kendrick outshone him by mentioning Drake, J. Cole, Meek Mill, and other peers, and that he was unaware of how huge it would be.
It's been the talk of the celebrity gossip universe ever since it leaked.
"I think that his name dropping really took it over the top for sure," said Sean. "I haven't seen a hip-hop song stir up this much excitement in years."
"Control" didn't even make his new album Hall of Fame, amazingly.
This was due to a sample clearance issue, not the NSFW lyrics, but Sean is trying to make it available on the digital version of the album, due August 27.
"We're trying to work out something where it could at least work digitally. I really fought for that too, man," he says of getting the song a wide release.
