Robin Thicke, Pharrell and T.I. are suing Marvin Gaye's family and Bridgeport Records, insisting that their summer smash "Blurred Lines" is an original hit.
That's right ... the artist accused of ripping off an earlier work is the one suing, not the reverse, leading some to believe it's all part of a big PR effort.
The trio's omnipresent single has, in recent months, been accused of being a takeoff on Marvin Gaye's "Got To Give It Up" and/or Funkadelic's "Sexy Ways."
There has not been a whole lot made of this, though, which makes the lawsuit by Thicke, Pharrell and T.I. over "multiple adverse claims" seem dubious.
They note that their single is totally original and the "Gaye defendants are claiming ownership of an entire genre, as opposed to a specific work."
The "Blurred Lines" trio argues that "being reminiscent of a 'sound' is not copyright infringement. The intent in producing 'Blurred Lines' was to evoke an era."
No one has made copyright claims against Thicke & Co., however.
Either the "Blurred Lines" suit is a pre-emptive move against a future lawsuit, or like their uncensored
