In the new issue of Fashion magazine, singing sensation Lorde makes it clear she doesn't want to be labeled or pigeonholed as a typical pop princess.
We'd say she does not have a lot to worry about in that regard.
"I'm drawn to women who aren't painted in history as sweet figures. Patti Smith was prickly. She didn't take people's s--t. She was frustrated," she shares.
"There's no better music idol for young women today."
"There is a lot of pressure for us to be really positive all the time. Every photo shoot I do, I get asked for big smiles, and I shouldn't have to be that way."
In that vein, the 17-year-old Lorde says she has flaws and is proud of them. This week, she shared a close up of her acne after a magazine removed it.
It isn't that she's against getting glammed up every once and awhile (see Fashion cover), it's just that she feels honestly is the best policy with her fans.
"Young people have changed the way we view pop culture," she says. "We now have this discerning power. We have Tumblrs, we curate imagery every day."
"We can sniff out bulls--t faster," Lorde observes.
As for what else she hopes to inspire?
"There are very few limits on what can be achieved by anyone of any age, living anywhere and of any race, because of the web ... I'm proof of that."
