When Miley Cyrus brought a "homeless" date to the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, she received mixed reactions.
Many felt the move was an empty gesture that had more to do with Miley's desire to steal the spotlight than with any sincere desire to help the homeless.
In the days following the awards, it was revealed that Helt was never actually homeless, and had relatives willing to take him in.
That news was followed by reports that there are several warrants out for Helt's arrest for charges ranging from burglary to criminal mischief.
Regardless of the fallout, however, Jesse's speech at the VMAs resulted in a slew of donations to one Los Angeles-area homeless shelter:
The My Friend's Place shelter - where Miley and Jesse reportedly met when she stopped by for a tour - reportedly received upwards of $200,000 in donations in the 24 hours following the Helt's TV debut.
In his speech, Helt directed viewers to Miley's Facebook page, where she had recorded a message explaining how fans can be entered into a contest to win tickets and backstage passes to her September 28 concert in Rio de Janeiro just by donating.
So there remains the possibility that Miley was thinking more about her career than about than about the homeless when she invited Jesse to the VMAs. Regardless, that simple act has had a greater positive impact than all the twerking in the world:
