Amanda Bynes' parents saw trouble on the horizon for their daughter, even though they legitimately felt she was doing a lot better these days.
Before Amanda Bynes was arrested for DUI early Sunday morning, Rick and Lynn Bynes believed she was in a good place under new circumstances.
A little over a year ago, after several brushes with law and many instances of downright bizarre behavior, the actress was involuntarily hospitalized.
Six months of intensive treatment followed, along with a conservatorship overseen by Rick and Lynn, whose California home she moved back into.
Bynes, 28, enrolled at the Irvine, Calif., location of the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, and her folks believed she had been thriving there.
"They truly believed Amanda was doing well based on the first and second semesters' grades, which were stellar," says a source close to her parents.
But conservatorship expired on September 10 and, according to our insider, the Bynes family sensed that something was different almost instantly.
What they did not know was the extent to which things had worsened.
Amanda moved out to live closer to campus, and soon enough, she had failed out of the fashion school, unbeknownst to her parents or anyone else.
Last weekend, the troubled star was pulled over in L.A. and arrested.
"The first signs of problems came days after the conservatorship ended," the source says, noting that it will be hard for Rick and Lynn to regain control.
'The process has to start again, [and it[ cannot start again with just a DUI. It's going to require a 5150- [psych hold] type situation again. She is not there yet."
"Once [the conservatorship] has ended, it's a 'hard expire.'"
Doesn't sound good there. As for their relationship now?
Rick Bynes indicated earlier this week that he knew nothing of the arrest or where she was, telling a paparazzi member, "you know what we know."
Her parents are keeping tabs on her via "various people," the source says. "They are monitoring her whereabouts, her spending and her driving as best as they can."
"Essentially she was able to mask her poor grades and downward spiral from them. They wanted to believe she was being honest and getting better."
Bynes just got her license back in April and by all accounts had been looking healthy and happy in photos taken at school and while out and about.
In April, Lynn said that her daughter had "no mental illness whatsoever" and was "very sorry" for all the actions which she blamed on the "influence of marijuana."
Amanda was arrested on suspicion of DUI, her second DUI bust in 29 months, at 3 a.m. on Sunday after being pulled over by California Highway Patrol.
An officer suspected that she was "under the influence of a controlled substance" and took her into custody at the LAPD's Van Nuys Station.
Bynes, who is on probation in connection with her previous DUI, was reportedly high on Adderall and off her medication for schizophrenia and bipolarity.
