On Wednesday night, a shooting at a church in Charleston, South Carolina left nine people dead in what appears to have been a racially motivated hate crime.
21-year-old Dylann Roof was arrested for the shooting yesterday after fleeing to North Carolina.
Today, Roof has reportedly confessed to police, and his chilling account of his horrific crime is unlikely bring any comfort those who have been affected by the tragedy.
Sources tell NBC News that in his confession, Roof stated that he "almost didn't go through with [the shooting] because everyone was so nice to him."
Roof reportedly said that he eventually decided to "go through with his mission."
Witnesses who survived the incident at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church say that Roof attended a prayer meeting for over an hour before carrying out his heinous act.
The 193-year-old church, which has hosted lectures and sermons from historical figures such as Booker T. Washington and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., has been targeted by violent bigots in the past, but no one has devastated Emanuel African and its surrounding community in such a horrendous fashion as Dylann Roof.
In a statement issued today, South Carolina Governor Nikki R. Haley called for Roof to face the death penalty.
The alleged shooter will be in court for a bond hearing at 2 pm today.
