Just when you thought Stephen Colbert couldn't gift the Internet with anything more glorious than the epic Colbert Report finale, he goes and blesses us with a silvery face-mane that would make Hemingway proud!
Yes, the Colbeard is now a thing, and as is the case with everything Stephen does - it's pure, uncut Internet catnip.
"EVERYONE STOP AND LOOK AT STEPHEN COLBERT'S BEARD!" tweeted one caps-lock-happy fan.
"Stephen Colbert is Santa Claus. It kinda makes sense," wrote another.
The above photo was taken at something called the US-Ireland Alliance's Oscar Wilde Awards, and naturally, the red carpet was buzzing with talk of Stephen's liberal facial hair.
"I have not allowed this to happen to my face since college because I've been working professionally pretty constantly since then," Colbert told The Daily Beast.
"I have like nine months where nobody has to see me, so I said, 'I wonder what I'd look like.'"
"For the record, I'm not in character. It turns out the real Stephen Colbert had a beard the whole time.
Well, as sad as we were to see "Stephen Colbert" go, we're happy to see Stephen Colbert show his true face to the world.
We'll be even happier when Colbert takes over for David Letterman in September. Nothing against Dave; we're just seriously jonesing for some Stephen these days.
