First, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner divorced.
Then it was Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert.
Just yesterday, the world learned that Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale are calling it quits after 13 years of marriage.
Now, in a spilt that's sure to rock the celebrity gossip world to its very core, Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy ("Keggy" as they're often known in the press) have decided to go their separate ways.
The iconic inter-species duo made the announcement on The Muppets Facebook page just moments ago:
"After careful thought, thoughtful consideration and considerable squabbling, Miss Piggy made the difficult decision to terminate our romantic relationship. We will continue to work together on television ("The Muppets"/Tuesdays 8pm this fall on ABC) and in all media now known or hereafter devised, in perpetuity, throughout the universe.
"However, our personal lives are now distinct and separate, and we will be seeing other people, pigs, frogs, et al. This is our only comment on this private matter. Thank you for your understanding."
The announcement was timed to coordinate with Tuesday's Television Critics Association panel, where Kermit revealed that his new girlfriend Denise works in marketing at ABC.
It was a clever way of acknowledging that when two puppets breakup, it's simply a means of promoting an upcoming project. (In this case, the rebooted Muppets TV series.)
That used to be the case with celebrities, as well, but these days, folks are legitimately calling it quits left and right.
Look, we have a few more weeks left in summer, everyone. Whether they're real or fake, let's call a moratorium on breakups until the fall. That includes you, Muppets.
