According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the plea deal negotiated this week includes significant jail time. NBC News says the term will be up to a federal judge.

The reported deal would also involve the disgraced son of the Rev. Jesse Jackson repaying the government hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Jesse Jackson, Jr. has been under investigation for allegedly using campaign funds to decorate his Washington, D.C., home, among other things.

He was also accused of attempting to buy a promotion to the Senate seat occupied by Barack Obama after the 2008 election, though this is unproven.

For months before his resignation, he was absent from Congress as he dealt with mental health problems that twice landed him at the Mayo Clinic.

Jackson resigned last November, shortly after being reelected to a ninth term in the House. Jackson hinted at a plea deal in his resignation letter.

Jackson Jr. promised to "cooperate with the investigators and accept responsibility for my mistakes, for they are my mistakes and mine alone."
