The latest WTF Were They Thinking award goes to maternity clothing retailer A Pea in the Pod. The "Wake Me When I'm Skinny" t-shirt they were selling in their stores and online was pulled after customers complained the shirt was offensive.
Because yeah, that shirt was/is offensive. Or at the very least the shirt is completely tasteless and unfunny.
Never ever in a woman's life will she have the excuse that she's not fat she's pregnant to fall back on when she's indulging a wicked craving for a milkshake at midnight.
SHE IS NOT FAT SHE IS PREGNANT! Pregnant women everywhere, say it with me: YOU ARE NOT FAT. YOU ARE PREGNANT. Growing a human. CREATING LIFE WITH YOUR LIFE.
You've freaking EARNED that milkshake at midnight. YOU ARE EARNING IT.
When customers tweeted that the $48 shirt was "gross" and a "major fail," Destination Maternity, A Pea in the Pod's parent company, which also owns retailers Motherhood Maternity and Edamame Motherhood Spa (whose name also earns a WTF award because really? Soybeans?), issued the following statement:
"At Destination Maternity, our customers are our top priority and we always value their feedback. We have taken immediate action to remove a T-shirt from our stores and website that was perceived as offensive. We apologize to anyone we may have unintentionally disappointed. We strive to offer products that celebrate pregnancy and are committed to supporting the health and wellness of moms-to-be and their families."
It's great that they took "immediate action" to remove the shirt, but one has to wonder how it ever made it through the approval phase in the first place.
Did no one sitting around the table in that meeting go "hey, so, about this really offensive and horrible shirt you guys want to sell? Yeah, it's really offensive and horrible and maybe you should rethink this move."
Haven't they learned from other retailers like Urban Outfitters? Some things just shouldn't be put onto t-shirts. It's okay to reject a bad idea in the board room.
Is pregnancy always enjoyable? Oh, god, no.
I've done it twice and there are certainly drawbacks to being pregnant. There is swelling and water retention and cankles. You WILL gain weight. Or at least girth.
But having a company sell a product that says you should want to wish you could Rip Van Winkle away your pregnancy because you're "fat"?
Ain't nobody got time for that.
