A transgender woman named Amira Gray has filed a legal complaint against a hookah bar in Washington, D.C. after she and eight friends received an offensive note on their receipt after a night of partying.
The incident occurred in August 2013.
According to Gray, she and her pals table mates were completely ignored by the waitstaff after an employee brought over their hookah machine.
When they were handed their bill at the end of the evening, the slur "Gay Bitches" was written on the receipt, as depicted here:
In response, Lambda Legal (an LBGT legal nonprofit organization) has now filed a public accommodations discrimination complaint against Bistro 18.
"Transgender, along with lesbian, gay, and bisexual, people suffer this kind of discrimination and harassment every day in every corner of this country," says Dru Levasseur, Lambda Legal Transgender Rights Project Director.
Gray, meanwhile, adds as part of the complaint:
As a transgender woman, I was extremely hurt, embarrassed and upset. I felt that the slur was meant as a slap in the face because of my gender identity and expression, my perceived sexual orientation, my personal appearance, and my association with my friends who are or may have been perceived as being lesbian or gay.
I believe that those at the table which I was seated were targeted for ill-treatment based on the fact that our group included transgender and gay patrons and patrons who may have been perceived as lesbian or gay.
Sadly, this is just the latest example of a cowardly waiter or waitress using his/her receipt to get an ugly message across.
This Red Lobster patron was the victim of a racist note following a meal, while this minister refused to tip... because he gives God 10%.
