Changes were very much afoot on Grey's Anatomy Season 11 Episode 1, as Meredith had to do without her "Person," while viewers got to watch her half-sister in action.
They also go to see the siblings acting like, well, siblings, fighting like crazy and constantly clashing at work, much to Richard's chagrin. The combination of Pierce wanting to impress Meredith and Meredith being bitter of her replacing Cristina led to a battle between characters that will clearly continue into Grey's Anatomy Season 11.
(Oh, and Amelia learned of the family secret during an AA meeting. There's something to keey an eye on.)
Elsewhere, two teenagers have sex in a car were slammed on the head when a gurney fell from the roof of the hospital. One of the teenagers was a cancer patient on his way to chemotherapy.
No. Really.
The case was used to bring the young boy's mother into the picture and to give Callie and Arizona a parenting style to debate.
Despite disagreeing often with her partner, Callie decided that, YES, they should go ahead and have a child via surrogate... only for Arizona to say she wants to do with fetal surgery fellowship, which would take up a lot of her time and make it hard to raise a child. This doesn't bode well for their future.
The future of Bailey and Karev, meanwhile, will be left to the board, whose members will vote at some point on who joins them.
Meanwhile, Derek didn't interact much with Meredith until the very end of the episode. But he at least delivered good news to his wife: he turned down the offer in DC.
After speaking to a young boy who lost his father, Derek realized how important staying close to one's family really is (he apparently needed to learn this from a child) and made it clear to Meredith that she didn't talk him into anything. He's choosing her and the kids.
Just like she always wanted, right? So why did Meredith not react with a smile? Why did she immediately say she needed a drink?
We closed the premiere (which you can catch up on if you watch Grey's Anatomy online through TV Fanatic) by seeing Meredith order tequila and wondering: Why isn't she happy about Derek staying?!?
She doesn't know it's her sister, of course. But she will soon enough!
