Demi Lovato has opened up more than ever about her struggles with drug abuse.
In an interview with Access Hollywood this week, the singer admitted she used to smuggle cocaine on planes.
And in further excerpts from that sit-down, the 21-year old shared why she finally chosen to get clean and sober toward the end of 2010.
"The last time that I had an intervention, it was my management, my entire team, manager, lawyers, everyone, and my parents coming into a room saying if you don't get sober – my mom specifically said, 'You know, we're going to move back to Texas and you're not going to be able to be around your little sister."
Lovato's half sister, Madison De La Garza, actually starred on Desperate Housewives for a number of years.
And Demi finally realized that she may never see her sibling again unless she changed her ways.
"I had to set an example for Madison," says Lovato's mother. "I had to protect her and [Demi] knew that."
So when I said, 'I'm moving back to Texas,' she knew that I finally meant it that time, and that's when we all sat down with her and said, 'This is it, you have to make a change or we're all going our separate ways because if you don't want this career, we're not going to want it for you.'"
Lovato left rehab in 2011 and has since devoted her life to helping others in need.
She's talked about hard drug use… about drinking vodka at 9 a.m… and about cutting herself.
"There should be no taboo about it," she says of her cutting. "I self harmed, and she [her mother] worried all the time. Sometimes when you're feeling so numb just by being depressed, you just want to feel."
