George Zimmerman will not face domestic violence charges despite his high-profile arrest last month, as his girlfriend does not wish to pursue the case.
She's already changed her story about what happened that day, and without that, there is scant evidence of a crime, a state prosecutor explained.
Samantha Scheibe's decision not to pursue the matter and a lack of other corroborating evidence would've made the case next to impossible to prove.
"There is no reasonable likelihood of a successful prosecution," Seminole County State Attorney Phil Archer said in a statement clearing Zimmerman.
The 30-year-old had faced charges of aggravated assault, battery and criminal mischief stemming from a November 18 confrontation at his Florida house.
George Zimmerman shared the home with Samantha Scheibe, whom he'd been dating since wife Shellie Zimmerman filed for divorce in September.
She initially told police Zimmerman pointed a shotgun at her face during a heated argument, smashed her coffee table and pushed her out of the house.
She recanted much of that in an affidavit filed this week in which she referred to Zimmerman as "my boyfriend" (present tense) and said she wanted him back.
There was also a report that she was pregnant, though it's unclear if that's true. Zimmerman told a 911 dispatcher that she was ... or at least that she said she was.
Zimmerman had been free on $9,000 bail prior to Archer's announcement and had been legally ordered to stay away from Scheibe's house in Apopka.
Zimmerman's attorney, Jayne Weintraub, filed a motion earlier this week asking that the no-contact order be lifted. That motion included Scheibe's affidavit.
"I am pleased that I was able to present credible evidence to reasonable prosecutors who took the time to listen and that justice prevailed," Weintraub said.
"This demonstrates how great our system is."
