Jamie Coots, a pastor/reality star who anchored the National Geographic Channel show Snake Salvation, died Saturday night from a snake bite.
He was 42 years old.
According to Kentucky's WBIR, Coots was found dead in his home around 10 p.m., two hours after he had been bitten inside his church.
Family members refused medical attention for Coots at the time because it was "against his religion," according to son Cody.
After the rattlesnake took a chunk out of his father's hand, near the base of his right thumb, Cody Coots said his dad went to the bathroom to throw up and was then carried to his car by five men.
They placed him in a living room chair inside his residence and he never regained consciousness.
In early 2013, Coots pled guilty to violating exotic animals laws and was ordered to give up his vipers.
Said National Geographic in a statement about Coots' death yesterday:
"National Geographic joins his family, friends and community in mourning the loss of Pastor Jamie Coots. In following Pastor Coots for our series Snake Salvation, we were constantly struck by his devout religious convictions despite the health and legal peril he often faced.
"Those risks were always worth it to him and his congregants as a means to demonstrate their unwavering faith. We were honored to be allowed such unique access to Pastor Jamie and his congregation during the course of our show, and give context to his method of worship.
"Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time."
