Readers of George R.R. Martin's epic-length A Song of Ice and Fire series knew that King Joffrey wasn't long for this world once he got engaged to Margaery Tyrell, but for millions of Game of Thrones fans, last night's "Purple Wedding" was something of a pleasant shock.
King Joffrey being his usual smug self. If only he knew what the day held in store for him.
2. Kind Joffrey Dying Photo
Joffrey draws his last breath. Who do you think killed the hated monarch?
3. King Joffrey: Death at a Wedding
One of Joffrey's memorable final moments. We were happy to see the wicked king go down.
4. Joffrey Baratheon: Purple Wedding Photo
King Joffrey enjoying his wedding day. As you may have heard, things didn't end so well for him.
5. Tyrion Lannister: King Slayer?
It may be his brother's nickname, but Tyrion might be the new king slayer. Did he poison Joffrey Baratheon.
6. King Joffrey: Poisoned!
Joff begins to realize something is amiss with his wine. Good riddance to an evil king!
It's rough to watch anyone go out in such an agonizing fashion but when the victim is an uber-douche like Joffrey Baratheon, you can't be help but wish he suffered more.
For those who missed it: King Joff was poisoned at his own wedding.
Moments earlier he'd dumped a goblet of wine on his Uncle Tyrion's head and further humiliated the fan favorite by appointing him the royal cup-bearer.
So naturally, Tyrion became suspect number one in the moments after Joffrey choked and sputtered his way to an ugly end, (the look of utter hatred Joffrey shot Tyrion with his last breath made for one of our favorite GoT moments thus far), but surely the crafty imp would be smart enough not to poison the King in front of hundreds of witnesses. Right?
You can check out a full list of suspects in our full Game of Thrones season 4, episode 2 recap. Some believe Margaery Tyrell was responsible for slipping her new husband a mickey (she was certainly rocking the most badass wedding gown in recorded history), while others have taken notice of the fact that the drunkard Ser Dontos seemed to know what was about to go down before anyone else.
