Like when you make a racist remark while critiquing someone's look on the red carpet of the 2015 Academy Awards.
Giuliana Rancic has learned this lesson the hard way after the E! Fashion Police panelist responded to Zendaya's dreadlocks on Sunday night by saying "I feel like she smells like pachouli oil. Or weed!"
Via a long Instagram post, Zendaya referred to this remark as "disrespectful" and "outrageously offensive," which prompted a casual mea culpa from Rancic on Twitter.
But Kelly Osbourne subsequently said she would quit the Fashion Police if "everyone involved" did not "make [things] right" within 24 hours.
Cue Rancic on last E! News last night and the video message posted above.
"I'd really like to address something that's weighing very heavy on my heart," she says in it. "I want to apologize for a comment that I made on last night's Fashion Police about Zendaya's hair...
Something I said last night did cross the line. I didn't intend to hurt anybody, but I've learned it's not my intent that matters, it's the result."
Concluded the E! personality:
"This really has been a learning experience for me, I've learned a lot today. And this incident has taught me to be a lot more aware of cliches and stereotypes, how much damage they can do. And that I am responsible, as we all are, to not perpetuate them further."
What do you think? Is this sufficient? Should Zendaya forgive and forget?
In a similar, race-based controversy from the Oscars, a Fox morning show host described Lady Gaga as a jigaboo while still giving the artist praise for her Academy Awards performance.
She has since apologized.
