Tragically, disturbingly and very unfortunately, we now have a very clear idea of what happened on Monday morning when Robin Williams killed himself inside his Northern California home.
The actor tried to slit his left wrist with a pocket knife. After failing to do so, he used his belt to hang himself and was found just prior to noon by his personal assistant.
We know this because Marin County Sheriff Office Assistant Chief Deputy Coroner Lt. Keith Boyd released these details the day after Williams died.
Facing backlash for making such grisly information public, Boyd released a lengthy statement yesterday explaining his actions.
"Under California law, all that information is considered 'public information,' and we are precluded from denying access to it," Boyd told ABC, adding:
"Frankly, it would have been our personal preference to withhold a lot of what we disclosed to the press yesterday, but the California Public Records Act does not give us that kind of latitude
"These kinds of cases, whether they garner national attention or not, are very difficult for everyone involved."
Williams' death has been met with extensive grief from fans, family, and friends around the world.
It has raised discussion about suicide and mental illness and it has resulted in heartbreaking tributes such as the following moving song by the cast of Aladdin on Broadway.
Robin brought the Genie in that Disney movie to entertaining life on the big screen and the actor who won an Tony Award for doing the same helped audience members pay tribute to Williams this week.
