Darren Wilson has been identified as the Ferguson, Missouri police officer who shot and killed Michael Brown in the incident that sparked national controversy.

A six-year veteran of the Ferguson police, Wilson has no disciplinary record, Ferguson police chief Thomas Jackson said today at a news conference.

Jackson provided few other details about Darren Wilson at the news conference and did not take questions about the case that has led to violent protests.

Wilson had been responding to a call shortly before noon Saturday when there was a 911 call regarding a "strong-arm robbery" at a convenience store.

A description of a possible suspect was given over the radio, saying that the person was walking toward the QuickTrip convenience store in Ferguson.

An incident report handed out by police on Friday labeled Brown as a suspect in the store robbery, which involved the theft of some Swisher Sweets cigars.

Wilson said he left the call he had been responding to and encountered Brown on Canfield Drive in Ferguson at 12:01 p.m., the police chief said.

Within minutes of Wilson's response, Brown had been shot and killed. Another police officer had arrived on the scene and a supervisor was dispatched.

Police did not release any other details regarding the alleged altercation between Brown and Wilson or what happened before Wilson shot Brown.

The unarmed 18-year-old was due to start college this week. His death resulted in a media firestorm and widespread outrage, protests, marches, even looting.

The QuickTrip was burned when protests turned violent Sunday night, and while last night was the calmest since the shooting, tensions are still high.

Imagery from Ferguson evoking scenes from revolutions in the Middle East, with tear gas filling residential streets, have spread on social media.
