A Washington, D.C. middle school teacher is under scrutiny for using a Venn diagram to compare George W. Bush and Adolf Hitler as part of a homework assignment.
In the assignment, McKinley Middle School students were asked to compare and contrast the "two men of power who abused their power in various ways."
After the diagram was posted to Twitter, D.C. Public Schools released a statement acknowledging the diagram and condemning the teacher for it:
"This week, a DCPS teacher created a worksheet which asked students to compare and contrast President George W. Bush and Adolf Hitler, after reading two texts."
"No DCPS curriculum materials suggest in any way that teachers should compare the texts in this manner or compare Hitler to any other individual."
"The teacher deeply regrets this mistake, and any suggestion to malign the office of the presidency or make any comparison in this egregious way."
The district went on to explain that one of the two texts in question, Fighting Hitler: A Holocaust Story, is part of the current suggested materials.
"The text about President Bush," meanwhile, "is not suggested as part of the current year's curriculum, but was included last year in a separate unit."
The statement also said the assignment was part of a unit on war and peace, with students studying "when conflict is warranted, and when peace should prevail."
The school says it will "also send a letter home to families explaining the incident and offering to address any additional questions should they arise."
Suffice it to say, many were unhappy about this, for obvious reasons.
One parent said the assignment instructions, specifically the part that says both men abused their power, present an opinion as fact and is particularly troubling.
The parent called it "a lack of respect for the office of the president."
