Giancarlo Stanton, the Florida Marlins outfielder who many considered the best young power hitter in baseball, was hit in the face by an 88 MPH pitch from Mike Fiers last night.
The scary incident took place in the fifth inning of Florida's 4-2 loss to Milwaukee, with manager Mike Redmond confirming after the game that Stanton is likely out for the season.
He suffered multiple facial fractures and dental damages as a result of the beaning, which you can see here. (WARNING: It's frightening stuff.)
Stanton lay on the ground motionless for several minutes, bleeding from his face, before he was carted off on a stretcher.
The umpire actually called a strike on the pitch, claiming Stanton made an attempt to swing.
So a pitch hitter was forced to take Stanton's place after the star was taken away... and he was then also hit by a pitch, setting off a bench-clearing brawl between the Marlins and Brewers.
Fiers took to Twitter after the game and addressed Stanton personally with a pair of messages:
- @Giancarlo818 I am deeply sorry about what happened tonight. I can't imagine what you and your family are going through. (Continue)...
