Derrick Gordon - a sophomore guard for the UMass basketball team - announced that he's gay today, making him the first openly gay player in division 1 basketball.

Saying that he felt inspired to make his announcement after Jason Collins came out as the first openly gay NBA player, Gordon told ESPN, "I just didn't want to hide anymore, in any way... I've been waiting and watching for the last few months, wondering when a Division I player would come out, and finally I just said, 'Why not me?'"
Asked about Collins, Gordon replied, "That was so important to me, knowing that sexuality didn't matter, that the NBA was OK with it."
Sources close to the UMass basketball team says that Gordon has the full support of his teammates and coaching staff.
The university issued an official statement reading, "UMass is proud to have Derrick Gordon as a member of our athletic family and to honor his courage and openness as a gay student-athlete."
Gordon's announcement comes on the heels of former Missouri defensive end and current NFL prospect Michael Sam coming out in February.
Hopefully Paula Deen won't feel the need to compare herself to Gordon, as she did with Sam.
