Thursday on Parenthood Season 6 Episode 3, the final season continued with Zeek's surgery and everyone else on edge as they awaited the patriarch's fate.

Parenthood has always done a great job of layering stories so that the characters react to what's going on with one another, and for one other simple truth:

Your own life can't grind to a halt just because your dad is in crisis.

Most shows would likely focus on Zeek (and most of his kids surely wish they could do that), but Parenthood Season 6 Episode 3 is a far more realistic portrayal.

Life gets in the way, yet it all comes back to Zeek's mortality, and the little epiphanies the others experience can all be traced back to his situation.

Julia's decision to tell Joel that she's been seeing someone else was pretty significant, even if the guy is clearly more into this romance than she is.

She felt she was at a turning point, and reacted accordingly.

Crosby, meanwhile, relates to Zeek more directly, as he's in denial about his father and has been engaging in some recent behavior that is self-destructive.

Adam is going through a tough time too, but his recklessness takes a different form than Crosby's. Emailing the worst case results he found on Google?

For Adam the steady hand, ever the pragmatist?

How does Amber feel about that turn of events?

That remains to be seen, but it was a turning point for her character and a strong show of maturity that hopefully is a sign of more to come from Amber.

Also, Drew FTW for his pep talk speech.

Sarah and Hank, meanwhile, continue to make their complicated relationship work in a way that's fascinating and strikingly real to watch, even if it feels out of place.

His struggles with his daughter could be their own show - there's nothing wrong with either character - but with the backdrop of Zeek, it feels less significant.

All in all, another solid episode from st
